The quality of refined and cold-pressed rapeseed oils differs significantly – especially when it comes to contamination with pollutants. The rapeseed oils in the test sometimes have problems with mineral oil and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. However, three of the 23 rapeseed oils tested are also “very good”.
But what is the actual difference between the two varieties? While cold-pressed rapeseed oils are obtained without the addition of heat, refined rapeseed oils undergo extensive physical and chemical processing steps that make the oil edible, tasteless and durable. In the process, unwanted substances such as pesticides are eliminated, but valuable ingredients such as secondary plant substances and around 30 percent of the vitamin E content are also lost.
If you like the typical fresh, juicy and slightly charcoal rapeseed note, a cold-pressed virgin rapeseed oil is just right. However, if you don’t appreciate the inherent taste but want to benefit from the healthy fatty acids, you can just as easily use a refined rapeseed oil. Based on our test, we can recommend both refined and cold-pressed oils.

Two refined rapeseed oils and one cold-pressed oil score top marks. We recommend seven other products with the overall rating “good”. However, there are also some oils that perform poorly due to contaminants or lack of flavor.
Almost 40 percent of the 23 tested products are only mediocre, three fail. There is criticism above all for carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and mineral oil components. The good news: the labs only found traces of pesticides, fat pollutants and plasticizers, if at all. Not a single rapeseed oil was adulterated or spoiled.
